A presentation on “How Dogs Think” given to the American Psychology Association demonstrated how tests meant for young children can be effective in measuring the intelligence of man’s best friend.
Highlights of the study include:
- Doggy smarts are comparable to a 2 to 2 1/2 year old human child.
- Dogs can learn up to about 250 words and signals. Kaiser’s got a lot of room for improvement.
- Dogs can count up to about 4 or 5 while performing basic arithmetic.
- Man’s best friend will deceive other dogs and people to get treats.
- Most intelligent dog: Border Collie, Poodles came in 2nd, followed by German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Dobermans.
- Hounds, more specifically the Afghan Hound finished last in the testing results.
After doing some research we found the Mini Schnauzer ranked 12 out of 100. That’s something to be proud of!

Hi Kaiser! Hmmm, we’ve always been a bit suspicious of those Border COllies! They get taught stuff and then immediately they’re almost BEGGING to be taught more and more!! It’s not natural, he he he! Our human was aware that we were in the top 15 – and keep on asking us what’s gone wrong with us…..humph!! Schnauzer snuggles – JD and Max.
