Well, not technically official (AKC standards), but Kaiser has entered manhood after being contacted to meet up with a Miniature Schnauzer here in San Diego. Marley, an 18 month old Schnauzer, had entered into her first heat and her owners wanted to have puppies to give to family members. Typical Schnauzer litters for a first time birth range from two to four puppies per litter. After doing some research we learned that the gestation period is only about nine weeks long. So, if all goes as planned Kaiser will be a father by early to mid August.
Kaiser just turned a year old, sounds pretty young to be breeding, but they are actually cleared to breed once they reach eight months of age. Kaiser and Marley had both been evaluated by vets before meeting, and both dogs are in good health. They got along just great and had a really fun time playing around in the backyard. It did not take them too long to get to business and they spent about an hour together. We hope to get confirmation on Marley’s pregnancy in a couple weeks. It should take about a month to visually determine whether or not the meeting was successful, unless of course an ultrasound is involved which can cost a pretty penny.
Marley is under constant surveillance at home, and her grandmother is an experienced breeder. Let us know if you have any tips for taking care of a pregnant Schnauzer that we could pass along. We’re also thinking of keeping one of the litter, but are a little worried with how a father acts around their own puppies. We’d be interested in hearing any of those types of stories.

I have to say that I am disappointed to hear this. Leave the breeding to the experts – there are too many homeless animals out there as it is. Like Bob Barker always said – help control the pet population!

Good to hear from you. Please don’t worry about the puppies not finding homes. They will all be going to family members of Marley and Kaiser. Marley is receiving much attention and oversight by an experienced breeder.
